Chapter Eight
Rygael
A day had passed since my discussion with Lily. There were times I could tell she was nervous and uncomfortable with her surroundings. She seemed to be embracing her new life, but I sensed there was something else troubling her. Something that had nothing to do with fitting into her new home. Something I hoped she would eventually share with either Harper or me.
I was glad we had not received any reports from Burke about Conrad, but I continued to remain wary that the male would return and try to find Lily.
Lilyâs arrival had also had a positive effect on Melissa. The young one had not shown up in my room in the middle of the night upset by bad dreams. Though I did not suffer from nightmares, I had found sleeping difficult. The bed and location were not the problem. My frustration stemmed from thoughts of telling Harper she was my ketiorra and how she would take the news.
Allowing me to kiss her was one thing, agreeing to share my bed was another. What if she refused to accept me as her male for a lifetime bond, and asked me to leave? I cared deeply for the female and could deal with any number of rejections, but that was not one of them.
No sooner had I forced my eyes shut then I heard a noise coming from outside near the rear of the building. I rolled on my back and strained to listen. Most of the creatures that lived in the nearby woods were not dangerous, but some were nocturnal. It was not uncommon for them to wander close to the dwelling searching for food.
Instead of the light patter of rummaging footsteps I had expected, something much heavier, something possessing two feet, crept along the wooden platform causing the planks to creak.
Since my room was on the lower level, I hoped to reach the intruder before they had a chance to gain access. I was glad the remaining sleeping quarters, including Harperâs, were on the upper level. It would make them more difficult to reach if I was right about the unwanted visitor being a person.
Slipping out of bed as quietly as possible, I grabbed my blade from the nearby stand, then made my way along the hallway and toward the kitchen where the rear entrance was located.
The human dwellings were simple structures, built from natural resources. The doors and viewing panes were designed to hold up against bad weather but lacked sufficient locks to keep out unwanted visitors.
So far, I had only detected one set of footsteps and hoped whoever was outside was acting alone. As a precaution, I took one of the chairs sitting next to the table, set it at an angle, and used it to brace the front door, then grabbed the other chair and headed for the kitchen. If I had been living alone, I would not have bothered. I would have allowed the intruder to come inside, then handled them with my blade.
